Today I started upgrading my hosts to 5.1 from 5.0. I have yet to find a quick guide on upgrading. First, I can’t drive out to my datacenter and spend a day there to upgrade the hosts, so I need to do it remotely. Also I don’t really know the esxi terminal really well, so this solution will use the update manager plugin. I have a smaller vmware environment, about 15 hosts so this worked for me.
First download VMware-VIMSetup-all-5.1.0-799735.iso. The 3.4GB iso. Move it to your machine or vm that runs vCenter Server and mount it.

Run the simple installer. It will throw a bunch of warnings, it scared me, but I accepted the defaults and clicked through. The installer will prompt for a new password. I’m not entirely sure what this is used for. The installer will take about 20-40 minutes depending on if its installing SQL. Then you want to install the update manager

Now you are finally ready to import the 5.1 image.
If you haven’t downloaded it – VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.1.0-799733.x86_64.iso.

You want to upload the iso to the update manager like this…

Then you can attach and remediate as normal, your host will be upgraded to 5.1

Chrony F1 Master Results
Yesterday I took out the Shooting Chrony F1 Master Chronograph and got some good data points. For those who don’t know, a shooting chronograph measures the feet per second your bullet is traveling. You probably will never *need* to know this, but it gives me more information on my reloads.
From my Remington 700 with a 26″ barrel – 7mm Rem Mag, Midway 154gr – 2811 FPS, Hornady 139gr SST – 3014 FPS, and factory Power-Point 175gr round pushed 2929 FPS.
On a side note, I’m very happy with the stock upgrade. Emily and I shot great groups with it.
I only chronographed 9mm in pistol yesterday, but it’s neat to come pare with the rifle. How much different they really are. 9mm 124gr Precision Delta loaded with Win 231 gave me 1100 FPS out of the PPQ, and closer to only 1000 FPS out of my PX4(with a shorter barrel)
I shot a couple of my carry PDX 147 rounds from the PX4, and they are around 850FPS. I may switch to the 124gr +P.
I need to pickup the Chrony printer. My only gripe about this product was other than me writing it down, or typing it into my phone, there is no way to save the data.
Domain name for a decade
I’m up late and was just looking over the stats of my page, and decided to do a whois on postinger.com
I’ve owned the domain and had a page up in some form for a decade now. That’s kind of neat. August 9 2002 is when I registered postinger.com. I was 15 at the time and I’ve had some sort of blog/about me/photos up ever since. During college I didn’t have much time to put into it, but now I try to update more often.
I’ll never let it lapse. You pass domain names down through generations, right?
Mountain Lion Wireless Connection Slow – Mac OS X 10.8
I upgraded my Macbook Pro (mid 2009) to 10.8 about a week ago. Just a few observations:
When waking from ‘sleep'(when the screen is shut) the wifi takes much longer to connect than in previous operating systems. I started to time it, over 20 seconds from when its opend to when I’m back online. I’m not far from my access point or anything, it does it when its 5 feet away from my Apple Time Capsule. I never timed it in previous operating systems because it was never an issue, but it’s definitely slower.
Also I’ve noticed the battery life seems to be shorter. I haven’t done any tests with that, but it certainly feels like I’m plugging in more frequently.
Guess I’ll wait for 10.8.1.
